GRANTS NOW CLOSED FOR 2008

FREEMASONS WA EDUCATION GRANTS
The Grand Lodge of WA are proud to offer educational grants on an annual basis to students from years 11 through to Post Graduate studies. The grants are made possible only through the kind and generous donations and bequests made by many members of our West Australian Constitution.

Students from all walks and fields are encouraged to apply.

SECONDARY EDUCATION GRANTS (YEAR 11 & 12)
Various Masonic Lodges and other Masonic Orders have provided funds for grants for years 11 and 12 to assist in achieving a qualification at a recognised institution.

POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION GRANTS
Post-secondary education grants are available to assist students to undertake or continue a course of full-time study for a first degree or other qualification at tertiary level. Each award is granted for one academic year. However, an award may be re-applied for annually until the first post-secondary course is completed. Success of awards is dependent upon a satisfactory record of academic progress and a continuing financial and economic need for assistance.

Freemasons are able to offer grants on an annual basis for full-time study for a higher degree by research at a recognised university.

The grants are available to holders of a degree, preferably of a 2A honours standing or equivalent. The awards are made on merit after considering:

  • the scholastic capacity and the proven scholastic ability of the applicant;
  • the financial and economic needs of the applicant; and
  • the character of the applicant.

The value of each award is determined after taking into account the financial need and may comprise:

  • an annual stipend;
  • an annual allowance for a dependant spouse;
  • a travel allowance for a recipient normally resident outside of WA;
  • an incidental allowance for each year of the course to assist in meeting the cost of fees and subscriptions;
  • an establishment allowance for a recipient who is required to move from another town or city of normal residence to take up an award; and
  • a thesis allowance.

The stipend and other allowances are determined in line with similar benefits available under the provisions of the Australian Post Graduate Award Scheme.

ELIGIBILITY
The grants are intended to assist students to undertake a course of full-time study for a first degree or other qualification at a tertiary level. The awards are made annually and are intended to supplement assistance available from other sources (e.g. Austudy). Eligibility for an award is determined after taking into account such factors as proven scholastic ability, as well as the financial and economic needs of applicants and their families.

All applicants must be:

  • of good character;
  • Australian Citizens studying at a Western Australian university or another Western Australian tertiary institution;
  • residents of Western Australia; and
  • sponsored by a Western Australian Freemason

The Post Graduate education grants may be supplemented, with approval, by other similar awards, and limited part-time employment may be permitted.

Please note that no incomplete/late applicants will be considered. The decision to approve or reject an application is the right of the Grand Lodge. This decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
